A family altercation in which U.S. women's soccer star Hope Solo had a wooden broom cracked over her head painted scene that left many questions unanswered beyond Solo's non-guilty plea on two counts of fourth-degree domestic violence assault.
CNN reported that Solo appeared in court Monday to dispute a police reported indicating that she assaulted her half-sister and 17-year-old nephew at a home near Seattle. A pretrial hearing has been set for the morning of Aug. 11.
Police in Kirtland, Wash., responded to a 911 call in which a male reported that a woman would not stop "hitting people" or leave the house, the police report said. Officers heard a disturbance at the home, walked in and found Solo, who they say appeared "intoxicated and upset."
CNN reported that the police affidavit indicated that the nose and jawbone of Solo's nephew were red and that his shirt was ripped from the underarm down to the bottom. Also, the left cheekbone of Solo's half-sister was swollen and turning purple.
After interviewing witnesses, police determined that Solo was the "primary aggressor and had instigated the assault."
Solo's nephew said that Solo insulted him over his weight and called him crazy. The two exchanged vulgarities, according to the affidavit, and Solo charged her nephew and got in a fight with him.
The half-sister entered the room, and Solo attacked her, according to the report.
It was not immediately clear what happened that led to Solo turning her attention to her half-sister, but when she did, her nephew grabbed a wooden broom that he "broke over (Solo's head)" to try to stop her attack on her sister, the affidavit adds.
Solo didn't let up, according to the report, and the nephew then found a broken BB gun and aimed it at Solo to force her to leave.
She did, only to jump a fence and re-enter the house to resume her attack on her half-sister, the affidavit states.
Solo denied that she assaulted anyone, according the same affidavit. She admitted to calling the nephew "fat and unathletic," prompting him to hit her with the broom, the affidavit states.
Solo's lawyer, Todd Maybrown, confirmed that she was hit over the head with a broom handle, but did not offer any new comments to the email he wrote the media saying that Solo was the one assaulted an injured in the melee.
Solo was released Tuesday on the conditions that she avoid contact with her nephew and half-sister and that she refrain from drinking alcohol.
