The defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox haven't looked like contenders to repeat up to this point in the 2014 campaign, but the Sox are looking for ways to turn the seasons around and are reportedly interested in Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp.
Jimmy Rollins 'Open' To Phillies Trading Him
According to the Boston Globe, the Red Sox have taken a "significant" look into Kemp recently and given Los Angeles' crowded outfield, Boston could be mulling a potential trade offer for the Dodgers slugger.
Kemp, who is always an injury concern and can sometimes be a liability on defense, has found his stroke this season and a match with Boston may not happen due to the fact that Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti hasn't put him on the trading block, still things can change between now and July 31 and the Red Sox are interested.
Orioles GM Says Manny Machado Demotion 'Always An Option'
Through 67 games, Kemp is hitting .274/.333/.460 with seven homers and 28 RBI as the Dodgers sit at 42-35, four games behind the San Francisco Giants in the National League West and hold onto the top wild-card spot three months into the season.
With Los Angeles in the hunt for its second consecutive postseason appearance, it may be unlikely that the team will part ways with Kemp. Boston can't be blamed for at least keeping a watchful eye on Kemp as the defending champions enter Monday at 35-41 and in fourth place in the American League East, 6.5 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for the division lead.
While it may be unlikely that Los Angeles parts ways with Kemp, his name will continue to pop up in speculation due to the Dodgers having plenty of options in the outfield when everyone is healthy.
Kemp, 29, has a lifetime slash line of .292/.349/.491 with 164 homers and 587 RBI, and while the Red Sox are interested in acquiring him, it is doubtful he leaves Los Angeles this summer.
