The New York Jets cut veteran running Mike Goodson on Wednesday after he failed to report for the team's mandatory minicamp this week.
Goodson lasted just one season in New York after signing a three-year, $6.9 million deal last summer. ESPN reported the Jets gave Goodson a "left squad" designation in hopes of avoiding having to pay him an injury settlement for the knee surgery he underwent just eight months ago.
Mike Goodson suspended four games
Goodson also faces up to 10 years in prison after being arrested on gun possession charges in New Jersey last year. At the time of his arrest, police said Goodson was incoherent and had vomited on himself. Indicted on the charges last November, Goodson was also found to be in possession of a hollow-point bullet and marijuana.
Goodson was suspended four games last season for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.
"This league is all based on showing up on time," added Jets owner Woody Johnson said. "One minute later, you're late. You have to respect that. Goodson is a talented player, but you're no good to the team if you're not here."
Goodson was also recently sued in Houston over an unpaid jewelry bill reported to be in excess of $56,000. Ultimately, ESPN reported his Oakland Raiders check was garnished of $84,423.44.
"We're in the human business," Idzik said of the Jets decision to sign Goodson. "We certainly do our due diligence, but you're really not going to know for sure until you get that individual in your organization."
