Nothing says "I love you" to Andre Johnson quite like naming Ryan Fitzpatrick the team's starting quarterback three months before the 2014 season opener.

Andre Johnson mad that the Texans didn't draft Johnny Manziel?

NFL.com reported that first-year Houston Texans coach Bill O'Brien announced that Fitzpatrick, now with his fifth team entering his 10th year, has won the starting job for the 2014 season opener in September.

Fitzpatrick never has won more than six games in a season and has started at least eight games in a season six times during his career. He has a 27-49-1 record as a starter, has passed for 16,790 yards with 106 career touchdowns and 93 career interceptions.

"He's a guy that earned the job," said O'Brien following Houston's mandatory minicamp session, according to NFL.com.

Andre Johnson prepared to sit out 2014?

"I'm excited about it," Fitzpatrick told reporters Tuesday, as NFL.com reported. "I don't think it changes much in terms of the way that I've got to continue to attack the playbook and learn and how we've got to continue to learn as an offense. We've got a very long way to go."

Johnson, the star wide receiver who has held out of all Texans' offseason functions because he doesn't want to play for a rebuilding team, has not commented on Fitzpatrick, but he can't be very happy about it.

Then again, none of the Texans' options at quarterback have made observers say, "Wow!" NFL.com reported that the Texans could release Case Keenum, T.J. Yates or rookie Tom Savage sooner rather than later.

NFL Films expert Greg Cosell told a Nashville radio station that he believes Fitzpatrick could have the best year of his career in pairing with O'Brien.

"It wouldn't surprise me if Fitzpatrick has his best year in the NFL," Cosell recently told Nashville's WGFX-FM, as reported by NFL.com. "We're not suggesting he's a top five quarterback but I think he's got some tools. I think he's a smart kid, he's got some movement to him."

Now, the Texans will find out if Johnson's got some movement in him - by demanding a trade or sitting out.
