Former Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber is in a Mansfield, Texas hospital and is under mental observation, according to multiple media reports.

Dallas Cowboys may bring back manslaughter convict Josh Brent?

TMZ Sports reported that an incident at a church near Barber's home prompted police to locate the seven-year NFL running back at his home. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that police then determined that Barber needed to go to the hospital.

Mansfield police responded to a disturbance call at 8 p.m. on Sunday at Barber's residence.

A Mansfield police log indicated that Barber was arrested on an "application for mental detention and observation," the Star-Telegram added. "Mental detention and observation" usually is indicative of a person who is a danger to himself or others. In such cases, police can take the person voluntarily in involuntarily to a hospital for observation.

Are the Dallas Cowboys worth $6 billion?

"This was not an arrest, but he may have had handcuffs on him if he was placed in a patrol car," Mansfield police spokesman Thad Penkala said, according to the Star-Telegram. "He was taken to a hospital and we wouldn't know how long he would be there."

Neighbors told the Star-Telegram that Barber, who played six years in Dallas from 2005-10 and one year with the Chicago Bears in 2011, moved into his home a month ago. He put large chains on the front gates of his home and secured the chains with locks.

"No one else in the neighborhood has chains or locks," said one neighbor who wished not to be identified because she is afraid of Barber. "I know he might just want to be a private person, but I found it odd that he had those there."

The neighbor also told the Star-Telegram that Barber screamed at her brother, who was outside with a pellet gun. Barber accused the 16-year-old of terrorizing him. She added that she recently saw Barber in his backyard, but he ran behind a wall to avoid being seen.

Barber had 4,780 career rushing yards and 53 touchdowns, and 1,330 career receiving yards with six touchdowns. He earned a Pro Bowl bid in 2007 with the Cowboys when he ran for 975 yards and 10 TDs with 282 receiving yards on 44 catches with another pair of TDs.
