Cam Newton is looking for far more guarantees than what Colin Kaepernick secured with his recent signing with the San Francisco 49ers.

Rumors persist that reps for the Carolina Panthers star quarterback are "terrified" the team may be looking to use the $13 million Kaepernick got in guaranteed salary as the standard for their dealings with Newton.

Cam Newton to undergo ankle surgery

"I'm not terrified of anything," Newton told ESPN on Wednesday. "For me, that's the last thing on my mind. The first thing is trying to get little anky right. I'm not worried about no money. I'm not worried about things I can't control.''

The third-year veteran underwent surgery to tighten ligaments in his left ankle three months ago. He is expected to be sidelined at least until the start of training camp.

Cam Newton earns his stripes

Though the 25-year-old Newton is under contract with the Panthers through 2015, Carolina recently expressed an interest in inking him to a longer deal similar to the six-year pact Kaepernick signed.

Newton passed for 3,379 yards and 24 touchdowns last season and has now averaged nearly 4,000 yards and 21 touchdowns over his NFL career. His best season came as a rookie when he threw for 4,051 yards and 21 touchdowns, becoming the first rookie quarterback in history to throw for at least 4,000 and rush for another 700.

In all, Newton has averaged nearly 700 rushing yards per season, adding another 28 touchdowns. The former Heisman Trophy winner was the top overall pick in the 2011 draft out of Auburn.
