The L.A. Lakers reportedly have eliminated one-time franchise stalwart Derek Fisher from their list of coaching candidates, bolstering the chances that the veteran guard winds up in New York as the first coaching hire of the Phil Jackson era.

According to ProBasketballTalk.com, despite Fisher being Kobe Bryant's top choice for the gig, the Lakers have decided they prefer a coach with previous sideline experience. Though Fisher has yet to formally announce his retirement, it is widely assumed last season with the Thunder was his last and he is more than ready to ascend to the ranks of management.

Derek Fisher, Phil Jackson to meet

That's where the 68-year-old Jackson comes in, who after being spurned by top-choice Steve Kerr, who took the same position in Golden State, is thought to still be heavily leaning toward hiring someone either stepped as a player or coach in the ways of his Triangle Offense. Jackson and Fisher previously spent several seasons in L.A. together.

With no clear cut favorite, at least publicly, in place for the job, the Lakers have now interviewed Mike Dunleavy Sr. Kurt Rambis, Byron Scott, Alvin Gentry and Lionel Hollins.

After suffering through the franchise's worst season (27-55) in history, the Lakers parted ways with Mike D'Antoni soon after the season ended, with Bryant who played in just six games last season, encouraging fans to "flush" any lingering memories about it with the bold assurance this season will be "epic."
