Michelle Wie wins in Honolulu to capture first event on American soil

Golfchannel.com reported that Wie fired a 6-under 65 in the opening round of the Manulife LPGA Classic in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada and shares the lead with Hee Young Park. The 24-year-old Wie is in search of her second tournament victory of the season after winning the Lotte Championship in April.

"I was early off, and I just wanted to make a lot of birdies early on," Wie told reporters after her round, according to golfchannel.com. "It's definitely one of those golf courses where you have to keep making birdies," Wie said. "My 6 under today, it's not enough. I need to keep making birdies for the rest of the weekend. Still a lot of work cut out for me."

Wie certainly has made more birdies in 2014. According to golfchannel.com, she has seven top-10 finishes in 11 events this season, including five finishes of fourth place or better. Once ranked No. 100 in the Rolex world rankings, Wie has vaulted up to No. 10 in just more than a year.

She again is peaking at the right time. The second major on the women's tour - the U.S. Women's Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in two weeks.

Wie was runner-up to American Lexi Thompson at the first major of the year, the Kraft Nabisco Championship. That was her first top-three finish at a major since she finished second at the LPGA Championship in 2005.

China's Shanshan Feng was third at 5-under 66. Her countrywoman XI Yu Lin and Christy Kerr both shot a 4-under 67 on Thursday. New No. 1 Stacy Lewis shot a 2-under 69 to finish three strokes behind Wie and Park.
