As San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick enters the 2014 season on his rookie contract, the two sides have agreed to sit down and start negotiations on a new deal.
The Sacramento Bee was the first to report that the two sides will meet. This will be the first contact between the team and Kaepernick with the intent of talking about an extension since the draft combine. The 49ers have expressed interest in extending Kaepernick for some time now, but are preparing to franchise tag the veteran if a deal cannot be agreed upon.
Kaepernick has no intention on missing any time regardless of his contract situation and has deferred all questions about his contract to his agent.
"I'm letting my agents handle all of that, and I'm worried about being out here, trying to get better with my teammates and get ready for the season," Kaepernick said. "I'm playing football regardless.”
Kaepernick is looking for a contract in the $18-20 million range that will put him among the more elite quarterbacks in the league. Kaepernick will make $1.073 million this season and with the 49ers only having $9.142 million of cap space for 2014, a deal is going to need some maneuvering from the front office.
Buffalo Bills quarterback EJ Manuel was seen working out with Kaepernick and when he was asked about the workouts he said he was trying to follow Kaepernick’s example.
The 49ers could find themselves in some serious salary cap trouble when/if they strike a deal with Kaepernick and if it couldn't get worse, tight end Vernon Davis wants to reopen talks about a new contract as well. Good luck San Francisco.
