The Detroit Pistons' new president of basketball operations and coach, Stan Van Gundy, foresees a future with the twin tower combination of Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond anchoring the team's frontcourt.

"I think it is an ideal pairing," he told the team's official website. "If I look at just the film I've watched now and looking at the numbers, you would say that Greg and Andre together were great offensively. That was a great combination on the offensive end of the floor, especially when the three guys around them were shooters - more conventional perimeter types. That worked very, very well."

However, Van Gundy was honest that the twin tower combination of Monroe and Drummond suffers on the defensive end. He added: "Now, it didn't work very well defensively. I think it puts a lot of responsibility on Greg Monroe to have to guard out on the perimeter."

He continued: "But I think there are things we can do in terms of schemes and things that would make it a little easier on Greg to make that unit better defensively and then take advantage of the offensive end of the floor."

Monroe will be a restricted free agent with the Pistons this summer, meaning the Pistons can match any offer to him by other teams. While the Pistons have the money to throw at Monroe, Van Gundy will also have to be cautious in giving Monroe a near-max deal because that would affect their financial flexibility in the future especially when Drummond becomes a free agent several years from now. The Pistons have already committed a huge contract to Josh Smith last year.
