Miguel Cotto faces arguably the most difficult challenge of his career on June 7 when he fights for Sergio Martinez's WBC middleweight title, perhaps even greater than taking on pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. because of the size jump.
Cotto doesn't seem concerned about moving up in weight though, as both he and trainer Freddie Roach have talked about how well his power's translating to the 159-lb. weight.
Miguel Cotto believes Freddie Roach is the key to beating Martinez
When asked by Boxing Channel whether he notcies anything new with his body in this training camp Cotto responded, "The way I train for this fight. The comfortable way that I feel. I'm going to be better this fight."
He also expressed as little concern as possible about the issues Sergio may present size or style-wise, remaining confident that his work and training will override whatever Maravilla's preparations are.
Cotto calls Martinez "B-Side" to June 7 fight
"We're just preparing for a great fight, just trying to get the best preparation for ourselves. We don't have any kind of worries about Sergio. If we train the way he have, we're definitely going to win the fight," Cotto said.
Whereas Cotto took the humble route, Roach was a bit more firm in how he expects Cotto to get his win. "They say the fight goes nine rounds," Roach said. "I think we win in four rounds. Miguel's ring generalship alone will win this fight," said Roach. "We have two more days of sparring, then four rounds of work and that's it. We are ready to fight."
The nine rounds portion of Roach's comments originally came from the mouth of Martinez, who has vowed to "punish" Cotto for his "diva" antics during negotiations, such as insisting he be billed as the top name, be introduced last, and get the red corner despite Sergio's status as middleweight champ.
"Miguel Cotto is a good fighter and a future hall of famer, but he will not become the World Middleweight Champion by defeating me. The only way I see this fight ending, is with Miguel Cotto being knocked out. I cannot see the fight going past nine rounds."
