With the future of All-Star and franchise player Kevin Love hanging in the balance, the Minnesota Timberwolves are considering hiring ex-player and former Toronto Raptors coach Sam Mitchell for the team's vacant head coaching position.
Yahoo! Sports is reporting that Mitchell was interviewed by Wolves president Flip Saunders, who was impressed by his former player making the latter a leading contender for the job vacancy.
This as the Wolves reportedly are considering to look at the available deals for their star Love, who has hinted that he will leave the Wolves next summer as a free agent and join another franchise who can give him a better shot at winning.
One rival executive even told Yahoo!'s Adrian Wojnarowski that Saunders is looking for the offers for Love for the first time, as the Wolves have constantly denied that their star is on the trading block.
It has been reported that four teams are targeting Love, namely the LA Lakers, Boston Celtics, Golden State Warriors, and Phoenix Suns. Boston and LA, by virtue of their poor records the past season, have lottery picks and are expected to trade them for a chance to nab the versatile power forward.
It's not certain how much influence Mitchell can have on Love to make the All-Star forward stay, especially if the Wolves can't surround him with enough good players to contend in the tough Western Conference. Despite having a winning record of 42-40, the Wolves missed this year's playoffs. Love has never been in the postseason during his six years in the league.
Mitchell is a former Coach of the Year, having won the award in 2007. He coached the Raptors for five seasons before getting fired in 2010.
