Tonight at 7:10 p.m. ET at Fenway Park in Boston, the Detroit Tigers (24-12) and defending champion Red Sox (20-20), two favorites in the American League to reach the World Series, will square kick off a three-game set with aces on the hill. Max Scherzer (5-1, 2.04 ERA) will pitch for the Tigers against Jon Lester (4-4, 2.75 ERA) in a clash that can be live streamed by clicking this link. Red Sox fans can tune in to the radio broadcast on 93.7 WEEI, while Tigers fans can find the game on 97.1 The Ticket.
Scherzer, the reigning AL Cy Young winner, will be gunning for his sixth straight win today. "Any time you're facing a great team like that, it's going to be a battle," Scherzer said. "That's what makes it fun. For me, it's always fun going in there and playing the Red Sox at Fenway Park."
Scherzer's main obstacle will be Boston DH David Ortiz, who has three regular season homers against him and owns a .515 batting average with five round-trippers over his past eight games. His opponent, Lester, is facing his second consecutive stacked lineup. Adding an opposing ace to the mix figures to make the game more intimidating, but Lester downplayed the duel.
"I'm not pitching against that guy, but at the same time you are," Lester told the team's official website. "You know what you're up against. You know that guy's name and his track record and what they've been able to do. At the same time, you have to worry about the lineup and try not to give up as many as the other guy. You know it's going to be a grind from pitch one."
Lester is having the finest season of his career, posting the second-best strikeout per nine rate of his career (10.7), the lowest walks per nine (2.1) and home runs per nine innings (0.5).
