If you can't return to relevancy on the pitch, marketing dollars will always do the trick.
Luis Montes, Carlos Peña Not An Option for Chivas Guadalajara?
Despite not being able to sign Mexican striker Oribe Peralta and seeing him land in the worst place possible—Club America—Chivas Guadalajara still remains in the public eye. Details for the club's summer tour were announced on Wednesday, with the crown jewel of the tour being a friendly with Bundesliga champion Bayern Munich.
The friendly is scheduled for July 31 and will be held at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, NJ. Other cities for the summer tour include Los Angeles, El Paso and Milwaukee.
Yes. Milwaukee.
The recent history of Chivas Guadalajara has been far from flattering. The club has failed to qualify for each of the last three Liguilla's. The Goats even had the opportunity to end that paltry streak in 2014. All that was needed was three points at home on the final week of the season.
They lost 1-0 to Monterrey.
The question is: Why would Guadalajara even consider a summer tour when it should instead focus its efforts on returning to relevancy in Mexican football?
The answer is quite simple: Money.
A recent study by Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight delved into the popularity of North American sports teams in the global markets. The results shed light into the fifth most popular sport in North America. It was Liga MX, and it was spearheaded by Chivas Guadalajara.
According to the site's studies, the club generated more google searches than 19 NFL franchises and more than any MLS team could ever imagine.
Not everyone loves a winner. Sometimes, headline news of any kind is enough.
Just ask the Dallas Cowboys.
