Greg Monroe's days as a Detroit Piston appear over.

TheSportingNews.com is reporting the Pistons and new head of basketball operations Stan Van Gundy are both leaning toward allowing Monroe to walk as a restricted free agent, choosing instead to build the team around Andre Drummond.

Greg Monroe looking for max deal

"There are two things that made that job better for Stan," a source told website. "One is the fact that he gets to make personnel decisions, that is a big deal of course. But the other is Andre Drummond. If you want to build your team around a young player, Drummond is the guy. You're not going to build around both him and Monroe, they had too much trouble making that work. You pick Drummond and move on from Monroe."

The 25-year-old Monroe won't have a shortage of interested takers. Los Angeles, Charlotte and New Orleans are among the teams most prominently mentioned as possible destinations for the veteran forward, who averaged 14 points and nine rebounds last season.

Josh Smith says Pistons struggles not his fault

"If anyone is going to find a max deal for Monroe, it is David Falk," the source said of agent David Falk and Monroe's expressed desire to get a max contract. "They will be aggressive and try to find something in the early stage of free agency. Remember, he was the agent for a guy who is now a team owner. It's just a matter of whether the Pistons can get something back."
