After flirting with the possibility of breaking the bank in 2013 for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, Arsenal returned to their roots on Wednesday. The club activated its £3.3 million buy-back clause for former Mexican international Carlos Vela, returning the 25-year-old to North London (per Vozpopuli).

Joel Campbell Looking For A Chance At Arsenal?

Vela initially signed with Arsenal in 2005 on a five-year deal, but work permits and an inability to assimilate to the Arsenal way saw him on a serious of loan spells. Finally, in 2012, Vela was officially transferred to Spanish outfit Real Sociedad. Arsenal, however, included a £3.3 million buy-back option—one decided to exercise.

Vela hinted at a possible return to the club that kickstarted his professional career earlier in May. In an interview with Radio Marca, he made it abundantly clear the ball was in Arsenal's court (h/t to the Guardian). "One possibility is my clause of €30 million (£24.6m), but there's other options and we're looking at that to see what we can and can't do," Vela said.

"Arsenal can come back for me at €4 million (£3.3m) at any time, which is €1 million more than Real Sociedad paid," he added.

"I look at things differently these days, and I won't close the door on Arsenal, or any team in England. I think I'm better prepared to play in another country now."

A better-prepared Vela scored 15 goals for Real Sociedad this season—second only to Alan Greizmann—and created the most chances of anyone on the club (78). A more-matured game would serve as an immediate upgrade to Arsenal's strike force.

The best part is: It would fit the club's budgetary restrictions.
