There were few surprises in Miguel Herrera's 23-man roster for the 2014 World Cup. Of the 23 players Azteca Deportes leaked during a broadcast days before Herrera's announcement, 22 found themselves in Brazil.

Only Hugo Ayala (Tigres) failed to earn a ticket.

FIFA rules, however, dictate that national teams must have a provisional 30 players at this stage of World Cup preparations. On Monday, Herrera announced the seven reserve players that will allow him to meet FIFA regulations. Moisés Muñoz (América), Juan Carlos Valenzuela América), Alonso Escoboza (Santos Laguna), Miguel Ponce (Toluca), Javier Aquino (Villarreal), Miguel Herrera (Pachuca) and Aldo de Nigris (Chivas) are on the standby list.

It's been made clear to all seven: Barring an injury, don't expect to be in Brazil.

Neither of the reserves were invited to the World Cup training camp already underway in Mexico City. For Herrera, an apology is all he could offer (h/t to Goal). "I offered an apology to them for not being able to call them up," Herrera said.

"All seven have been very positive; the unconditional support for the national team is clear," he added.

"They have accepted this with maturity."

Mexico is one month from opening its World Cup campaign against Cameroon. With Croatia and Brazil to follow on the schedule, reaching the Round of 16 will prove to be difficult for El Tri. A team built on maturity and cohesion will be a much-needed added variable if they are to succeed.

It seems as if Miguel Herrera has finally laid the foundation to build those variables in Mexico.
