Steve Kerr's representatives are requesting a five-year, $30 million offer to seal the deal of the would-be-rookie coach taking over as the New York Knicks next signal caller.

According to the ProBasketballTalk.com, agent Mike Tannenbaum is haggling new president basketball of operations Phil Jackson for a package well in excess of even the staggering four-year, $24 million the team previously gave Mike D'Antoni in 2008.

Steve Kerr Knicks top choice?

Beyond always having been Jackson's primary target, Team Kerr also knows they have leverage, as the Golden State Warriors are also rumored to have the veteran guard and five-time league champion at the head of their wish list. Kerr previously played several seasons under Jackson in Chicago, winning three titles alongside Michael Jordan.

ProBasketball.com reports Kerr, 48, is expected to finalize and make his decision public sometime this week, though he reportedly also plans to finish his duties as a TNT analyst throughout the ongoing NBA playoffs

Phil Jackson takes over Knicks

If the Knicks land Kerr as expected, the Warriors are expected to turn to veteran coach Stan Van Gundy as their fall back candidate.

The 54-year Van Gundy has a 371-208 record in eight NBA seasons, his best coming in 2008-09 when he led Orlando to a 59-23 record and a berth in the NBA Finals. Van Gundy also won 59 regular season games the following season with the Magic and previously did do with the Heat in 2004-05.
