The top brass of the Golden State Warriors believe they won't get the services of current TNT broadcaster Steve Kerr, with sources close to ESPN.com saying that the former Chicago Bulls sharpshooter going to New York as head coach is almost a done deal.

The same sources said the belief within the Warriors organization is that Kerr is 'too deep' in talks with the New York Knicks led by his former Bulls coach Phil Jackson, and even his close ties with Warriors owner Joe Lacob and team president Rick Welts won't be enough to convince Kerr to try leading a young team headed by emerging superstar Stephen Curry.

ESPN sources also said that it is impossible for Kerr to turn his back on his former coach at this advanced stage of negotiations due to the close relationship of the two. Kerr, 48, has no coaching experience but is believed to have been assured by Jackson that he will be mentored in his first year as coach, similar to the way another legendary head coach, Pat Riley, groomed current Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra.

With Kerr practically out of the running, word is that former Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy is the top target for the Warriors to replace fired tactician Mark Jackson. The latter was out of the job despite leading the team to back-to-back playoff appearances.

Kerr has told the New York Post that he will finish first his broadcasting obligations with TNT before making the transition to a possible head coaching gig.
