Today at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC, the West's No. 1 seed San Antonio Spurs will take their home court in a deciding Game 7 against the Dallas Mavericks, concluding perhaps the wildest first round in NBA Playoffs history. While few expected San Antonio to struggle this much with a No. 8 seed, future Hall of Fame forward Tim Duncan expressed that the length of time victory takes is of little consequence.
"It doesn't matter how many games it takes," Duncan said. "We're not worried or disappointed." They may find themselves disappointed, however, if they don't get the leash they had on Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki back on him. Through the first four games of this series Dirk averaged just 16.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.
In the last two games, which Dallas has split, Nowitzki's averaged 24 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 52.5 percent from the field. Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle is trusting his squad, which is full of veterans, to treat this game like they did so many important regular season tests.
"It's another one-game season for us," Carlisle said. "We've had them all year. We know what they're about, and we wanted this opportunity." They'll be drawing from their well of experience built upon playing important game after important game as the regular season wound down with their playoff spot very much in doubt.
Both sides have tons of experience in Game 7s, and there are champions populating both rosters, but Dirk has a fearsome track record in Game 7s. He's 4-0 in his career in these spots, and has averaged 28 points and 15 rebounds.
