Before Extreme Rules hits the airwaves on Sunday, we'll take a look back at some of the best stipulated matches in the history of the show, which has been around since 2009.
Final Card For WWE Extreme Rules on Sunday
Extreme Rules 2010: Edge vs. Chris Jericho in a Steel Cage Match:
This feud was generated in 2009 when Edge had to forfeit his half of the Tag Team Championships that he held with Jericho due to an Achilles tendon injury that sidelined him for seven months. Edge then came back and Jericho was the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Edge won the 2010 Royal Rumble as a surprise entrant then lost to Jericho at WrestleMania XXVI, but he was able to gain some revenge the following month at Extreme Rules in a solid Steel Cage match, though Jericho had already dropped the title by that point.
Extreme Rules 2011: John Cena vs. The Miz vs. John Morrison Steel Cage Match for WWE Championship:
John Cena fell to The Miz at WrestleMania XXVII in the main event, however he was able to earn a rematch at Extreme Rules after he and R-Truth fought to a no-contest to each earn a spot. John Morrison then defeated R-Truth for his spot and it was announced that it would be a triple threat in a cage. The Miz played a great heel and Morrison had some heart-stopping athletic moves while making great use of the steel cage, but in the end Cena stood tall and walked out the champion.
Extreme Rules 2012: Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena:
Brock Lesnar made his first WWE appearance on Monday Night RAW in eight years on the night after WrestleMania XXVIII and interrupted John Cena. The two eventually feuded and it led to a barbaric and memorable Extreme Rules match at the 2012 edition of the event. It was interesting to see Lesnar back in a WWE ring for the first time since 2004 and adapting his wrestling style while Cena held his own in the main event. After a blood bath of a match, Cena hit an Attitude Adjustment on Lesnar onto the steel steps to walk out of the show triumphantly.
Extreme Rules 2011: Randy Orton vs. CM Punk in a Last Man Standing Match:
Extreme Rules
2011 kicked off in amazing fashion with Punk and Orton taking on each other in a Last Man Standing Match. Punk had cost Orton the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble Orton then powered through Punk's New Nexus stable and defeated him at WrestleMania XXVII. Punk then challenged him to a highly entertaining Last Man Standing match that had some great spots and ended with Orton standing tall in the center of the ring.
Extreme Rules 2009: Edge vs. Jeff Hardy in a Ladder Match for the World Heavyweight Championship:
The history between Edge and Jeff Hardy in ladder matches came to a head at Extreme Rules 2009. The two were embattled in memorable wars involving ladders when they took each other on in tag team ladder matches and tag team TLC matches throughout the years, and after Edge defeated Hardy at Judgment Day, Hardy opted to challenge Edge in a hellacious ladder match at Extreme Rules. The two delivered a great back-and-forth match on the show with plenty of great spots. Following the grueling match, CM Punk came out and cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase, defeating Hardy to capture his second World Heavyweight Championship.
These are five of the most memorable matches in the history of Extreme Rules. With the latest edition of the extreme pay-per-view hitting the air this Sunday, the WWE will likely have many more great moments up its sleeve to add to the lore of the event when Extreme Rules goes live this Sunday from the Izod Center in New Jersey.
