Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano, who have shown mastery of the new qualifying format from the get-go, have dominated the early positions this year. Larson's a fresh face in pole position for this one, however, which could make things interesting. Even if the qualifying was rained out, he'll gladly start things off with the lead.
"I'm still happy," he said Friday. "But yeah it would be nice to get a legit pole. I don't know if we would have gotten it had it not rained."
Larson was given the pole position based on running the fastest first practice lap. Keselowski had the second fastest lap, proving that no matter what happens he's going to be in a good spot.
"We would still like to qualify and have a shot at the pole but we foresaw this coming and put a little extra emphasis in the practice sessions to get a good run out of it and a good spot, and I am glad to see that kind of panned out for us," Keselowski said.
Last year's Richmond winner Kevin Harvick will run fifth, but many eyes are going to be trained on talented but inconsistent Denny Hamlin. "Well, we're not where we need to be, for sure," Hamlin said. "I touched on it a little bit. Our cars are a little bit off right now.
"There's a lot of little pieces and parts of our car that is a little off just a little bit, which really gets magnified -- especially when a couple teams have hit on something that really has given them an advantage at this point because they've found a setup that is really working well. We're kind of getting split by that at this time, but like I said -- we're getting better."
