Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer is preparing to welcome a real set of twins into the world this fall with his wife Maddie, the Twins announced Wednesday.
Mauer is a former top pick of the Twins, born in Minnesota, and his eight-year $184 million contract is the largest in Twins history, so of course Mr. Twin is going to have twins. Mauer's teammate, infielder Jamey Carroll, also has twins who celebrated their fifth birthdays Wednesday, the same day Mauer made his joyful announcement.
Mauer was taken first overall by the Twins in the 2001 draft as a high schooler, ahead of then-highly touted college pitcher Mark Prior. Mauer turned down a football scholarship from Florida State University to play quarterback. In high school, Mauer threw for 5,528 yards and 73 touchdowns in two seasons as a starter. Mauer also averaged 20 points per game as a high-school point guard.
Mauer first broke into the major leagues in 2004, and is a career .323 hitter in his nine seasons, all of which are in a Twins uniform. Mauer's name has often come up in trade rumors due to his high salary, durability questions, and the quality of the team around him but the Twins have constantly turned down offers. Most recently, the Boston Red Sox had inquired about Mauer's availability but ESPN's Jayson Stark said the Twins are not looking to dump salary. Mauer also has a no-trade clause. In an effort to stay healthy and play in more games, Mauer has played some first base. He dabbled in 2010, playing 18 games there but last season he logged 30.
Mauer wasn't available for comment on the announcement and he did not play in the Twins' 12-5 spring training win over the Philadelphia Phillies. A Star-Tribune article about the announcement has floated the possibilities of Minnie and Paul as the Mauer twins' names.
