Amir Khan has never been a wallflower in boxing, constantly touting himself and seeking out tough challenges. He was crushed after months of speculation that he'd be named Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s next opponent to find out that "Money" had settled on Marcos Maidana instead. Now, Khan's fighting on Floyd's May 3 undercard vs. Luis Collazo, and plans on stealing the spotlight.
Floyd challenges Khan to beat Adrien Broner before facing him
"I can tell you, our fight will steal the show," Khan told The National. "We are two exciting fighters, one with skills and speed and the other a big hitter. It is a 50-50 fight and that's what the fans want to see."
Khan called Mayweather "scared" on Twitter after he chose Maidana, and has since railed against the decision by citing his own win over "El Chino" in December 2010. "I don't think there is any arguments left there," Khan said. "I dominated all the rounds and put him on the floor, except in the 10th round where I got hit by a couple of his big shots. But I was on my feet."
Khan has a vastly bigger name than Collazo, but the Brooklyn-born challenger is a heady fighter with good power and experience with top-notch opposition. He's in the public eye now because of his Round 2 KO of Victor Ortiz, but he suffered questionable losses to Ricky Hatton and Andre Berto, and has been in the ring with prime Shane Mosley.
If Khan looks past him Collazo could pull off an upset, although Khan swears he's in the zone. "I am ready," he said. "I have all my focus on Luis Collazo and no one else. Collazo is a great fighter, a big puncher and I want to face the big hitters and prove my doubters wrong. I've been hearing non-stop from media and fans that I can't handle big punchers."
In other Khan news, a win vs. Collazo will most likely springboard him into the Mayweather sweepstakes now that he's hooked up with super-advisor Al Haymon.
"I am very happy to have signed with Al Haymon who has not only shown that he is a very astute businessman, but is extremely knowledgeable of the fight game and always has his fighters' best interests at heart," Khan said. "I'm looking forward to building a long and successful relationship during this exciting stage of my career."
