It’s official, former Tennessee Titan Chris Johnson has signed a two-year deal with the New York Jets. Johnson automatically becomes the best running back in the Jets backfield, but was this move the worst of free agency?
The actual money the Jets gave Johnson hasn't been released yet, but Johnson was rumored to have asked for two years, $10 million where the Jets refused to go higher than $3-4 million a season.
Let's assume the the number is right in the middle and Johnson is getting around $4.25 million a season--that would make Johnson the sixth highest paid running back in the league. This would put him over the likes of Ray Rice, C.J. Spiller and Jamaal Charles. Ever since Johnson signed his monster extension with the Titans, his production has dropped off the face of the Earth. The once- feared CJ2K became a skittish shell of his former self that would fall down on first contact and set up a 2nd and 12 more times than I can count.
The Jets offensive line isn't what it once was and on paper is in the bottom half of the league at this point. Johnson has a habit of calling out his lineman for his lack of production, but even in 2013 when the Titans offensive line finished 17th in the league as a unit, as compared to the Jets 26th, Johnson produced his worst yard per carry in a season.
The Titans' unit came on late to be a top 10 unit in the last eight games, but their early struggles buried them at No. 17. At first Johnson could be very good for the Jets, but after teams realize they don’t even have to attempt to put eight men in the box to stop Johnson they will focus the heat on the quarterback.
Needless to say I am not a big fan of this signing for the Jets. Johnson hasn't been a top 10 running back for a few years now and for every homerun play he gives the Jets he will give them 15 two yard loses.
