Giants quarterback Eli Manning has announced he will be having arthroscopic ankle surgery and will be barred from any running for six weeks.

Manning is coming off his worst statistical season of his career and suffered an ankle sprain during the season. Manning spoke about the injury and how it plays into this immediate future.

“I went through the recovery and rehab after suffering the sprain,” said Manning. “I was still experiencing some discomfort as I began my normal offseason preparation, and after consultation, we felt the right thing was to have Dr. Anderson clean out the ankle. The doc tells me I should be running in about six weeks. I’m looking forward to the start of the offseason program on the 21st. I will be in the weight room and in the meeting rooms so we can all learn the new offense. I got some good work in this week at Duke, and I think it’s smart to get this procedure done now so the ankle isn’t an ongoing issue. I’m eager to get to work with our new offensive coaches and system.”

As for the where this puts the Giants, it should be a wakeup call that franchise quarterbacks don’t come around every year and one day Manning will be gone. The Giants have greatly improved their offensive line situation from 2013, but more help is needed. The Giants can look at Manning and see he was constantly under pressure and banged around due to poor line play.

This recent surgery for Manning could prompt the Giants to look at offensive line much harder in the 2014 draft. If Texas A&M tackle Jake Matthews makes it to No. 12 the Giants shouldn't hesitate. Michigan’s Taylor Lewan is the only other tackle that would fit Giants scheme and pick. The Giants have need at defensive tackle as well, but if the right player is available the Giants have to consider protecting Manning.
