Animal rights activists have launched a petition on the website Change.org that seeks to ban newly signed New York Jets quarterback Michael Vick from being allowed on the SUNY campus where the team holds its training camp.
Addressed to university President Erik J. Bitterbaum, the petition directly states SUNY Cortland "should not associate with Vick due to his past association with dog fighting."
According to Syracuse.com, the petition also reads "I love SUNY Cortland, and cannot abide welcoming this sociopath onto our campus with open arms. We need to stand by what is right as a university by barring him from the grounds. I don't want him anywhere near my beloved college or community. We must send the message that we won't be party to the torture of animals by conveniently forgetting what he has done. If we welcome Vick onto our campus, we are complicit in his crimes."
The website reports thus far the online petition has garnered more than 1,400 signatures. The New York Jets have held training camp at SUNY Cortland four of the last five years.
Michael Vick NFL's most disliked player?
The Jets signed the 34-year-old Vick to a one-year, $5 million deal in March and he is expected to compete with last year's rookie starter Geno Smith for this year's starting spot. In 11 NFL seasons, he's passed for 21,489 yards and 128 touchdowns, while running for 5,857 yards and another 36 scores.
