Ray Rice's new wife may still be legally required to testify against him in the ongoing assault case he faces stemming from an incident last month where he allegedly knocked her out cold during a heated argument at a New Jersey casino.

BlackSportsOnline.com reports Janay Palmer will not be free from testifyng against her newlywed husband based on a New Jersey legal term known as spousal privilege.

While the website stresses Palmer has not shown any willingness in cooperating with authorities, she may yet be compelled to testify if and when the case goes to trial.

Two days after he was formally indicted on charges that could land him behind bars for as long as five years, Rice and Palmer announced they had wed in a ceremony they had been "planning for weeks."

The union comes roughly six weeks after Rice was originally charged with domestic violence stemming from the incident. Both Rice and Palmer were initially charged with assault and domestic violence against one another..

"We deny Ray Rice committed aggravated assault," said lead attorney Michael Diamondstein. "Neither Ray nor his fiancée wish to prosecute the matter. Ray and Janay are together. They're happy, and they're in counseling. We believe that as a matter of law that Ray Rice did not commit aggravated assault. We ask only that the public reserve judgment until all the facts come to light."
