Adrien "The Problem" Broner had been pushing Amir Khan to face him on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Marcos Maidana on May 3, but Khan, miffed at Floyd's decision after passing over him for the main event, has signed on to face Luis Collazo.
Adrien Broner stronger than Mayweather?
In the absence of a Khan fight, and with a Maidana rematch being delayed for obvious reasons, it appears Broner has turned to Carlos Molina as an opponent.
If he faces Molina, the fight will take place at 140 lbs., not welterweight, the truest sign yet that Maidana took "The Problem" down a peg. "This was a collective decision made by Adrien, me, and his manager," Broner's trainer Mike Stafford said. "We felt that fighting at 140 pounds was in the best interest of Adrien's career at this point in time."
After Maidana floored Broner twice in the December 2013 loss, Mayweather suggested Broner move back to 140 lbs. and get his career back on track. By facing Molina, whose only major fight was a loss to Amir Khan in 2012, Broner seems to be taking Floyd's advice seriously.
"We're taking Adrien's career one fight at a time," admitted Mike Stafford. "We're just anxious to get him back in the ring and get him back on the winning track."
The move could be a brilliant one for building him back into a superstar. Broner proved elite in the lower divisions, and was clearly hurting opponents at the lighter weights; also, it seems like reigning 140-lb. king Danny Garcia is heading to welterweight, leaving the class wide open for Broner to dominate.
The potential is there for Broner to pick off opponents like Molina, and eventually build back up to top-flight opponents like Lucas Matthysse. That course of action poses less risk for Broner than an immediate rematch at welterweight with Maidana, plus the May 3 situation keeps eyeballs on "The Problem."
"This is a great opportunity for Adrien to compete on the May 3rd Showtime PPV. This is such a huge stage and the perfect setting for his return bout."
