The Dallas Cowboys apparently love DeMarcus Ware, so they set him free on Tuesday. If he comes back, that means another team didn't love him more.
The Dallas Morning News is reporting that Ware and the Cowboys have left open the possibility of his return to the team.
According to a Dallas Morning News blog, team owner Jerry Jones and Ware met Tuesday to try to agree on a new contract. Even though that didn't happen, the men parted on amicable terms and a backup plan.
Ware is going to test the free agent market. Any significant offers for Ware's services will come in the first few days of his free agency, and if the salary he expects to command is not offered, he would be open to returning to Dallas.
The report added that Ware would inform the Cowboys of any offer he is considering with another team before he signs elsewhere.
The Cowboys would have owed their all-time sacks leader $12.25 million in 2014. According to ESPN, he would have counted a tick above $16 million against their salary cap figure, and the team saved $7.4 million in releasing him.
Ware, who will be 32 in July, has 117 career sacks.
"DeMarcus and I agreed on an understanding that would allow him to explore the options he will have for the 2014 season and beyond,'' Jones told the Dallas Morning News. "We were also in very strong agreement that playing for the Dallas Cowboys would be one of the options we would both be exploring."
The Morning News said Ware's return is doubtful because enough teams around the league have enough cap space to give Ware close to what he wants. It reported the Philadelphia Eagles were a suitor while ESPN reported that the Broncos have become the frontrunner for Ware's services.
NFL.com reported that six playoff teams were pursuing Ware, but ESPN quoted an AFC West source not in Denver, who was told he was not going to like where Ware was going to end up.
Unless it's back in Dallas.
