The New York Jets have been rumored to be sellers in free agency this season, but the sudden release of Antonio Cromartie has changed their forecast. The Jets have now freed up enough space to address some of their glaring offensive needs. A specific need they could target is a veteran running back in the form of Maurice Jones-Drew.

NFL free agency primer: Running back rankings and predictions

The need is definitely there for the Jets, who had one of the leagues best rushing attacks with players like Bilal Powell and Chris Ivory. Plugging an established veteran like Jones-Drew could push the Jets run game into the next level. The Jets have shown interest in Emmanuel Sanders and other wide recovers on the market, but Jones-Drew would take up some of the cap space necessary to sign other skill players.

Price could be the deciding factor for the Jets considering they have other need with limited cap space. Jones-Drew could be the luxury they simply cant afford and will have to seek cheaper alternatives in the draft. If the Jets rank an aging running back over the likes of Sanders, Brandon Pettigrew and Andre Roberts then they will move fast. The Jets would be better off coming away with all three of those targets over Jones-Drew, but Jones-Drew brings the star power the Jets live for. When the dust settles look for the Jets to use their money more efficiently in the free agency market than to spill it all on the bang or bust aging star that is Jones-Drew.
