Canelo Alvarez began 2014 with an eye toward fighting three times. After pummeling Alfredo Angulo to the point that referee Tony Weeks felt it was necessary to end Angulo's night early, Alvarez seems right on track. The question now for Canelo is who to fight next.

Canelo Alvarez "scared to death" to fight Erislandy Lara?

Cuban counter puncher Erislandy Lara has been very vocal in the last few months about Alvarez ducking him, but if he was next in line for a shot at the red-headed Mexican, those plans might be thrown off by him facing "The Money Team" fighter Ishe Smith on May 2nd, one day before Floyd Mayweather Jr. locks horns with Marcos Maidana.

Even if Lara was aware that he's taking on Smith in May, he saw fit to crash Canelo's post fight presser to challenge him. "Everyone wants to see us fight. When can we fight?" Canelo's response was to question Lara's statement, before chiding him for poor manners.

Canelo proved Angulo wrong about being "overrated?"

"Nearly everyone wants to see it? Who wants to see it?" Alvarez asked before pointing out Lara's manager in the throng. "Isn't that your manager? This isn't how you make fights, so you have to wait."

Depending on how the pay-per-view numbers shake out, Canelo could be eyeing a bigger name to follow up the Angulo fight, which played out much like a tune-up match to restore his confidence level. The winner of Miguel Cotto vs. Sergio Martinez will probably suit Alvarez's needs, especially if Cotto emerges victorious.

Cotto vs. Alvarez was the hot rumor before Cotto decided he wouldn't be ready to fight by March 8th. The rivalry between Puerto Rico and Mexico would be pushed to a fever pitch if these two titans collided, and even though Cotto turned down Golden Boy months ago the issue wasn't closed.

"It's a fight we all know has to happen down the line, but it didn't happen now and we're focused on March 8th and Alfredo Angulo," Alvarez said in January. "And when we get to that [Cotto] we'll concentrate on that one."
