David Beckham ended his career as a L.A. Galaxy player, with a 3-1 win over Houston Dynamo to lift their second straight MLS Cup.
Beckham announced earlier that he would not play another season with the club he has been with for nearly six years.
"We were telling David that we wanted him for one more year," Reuters quoted defender Todd Dunivant as saying. "We said that last year too and we got it, so why not push our luck a little bit? We will see what happens."
Beckham, clearly not too swayed by his teammates, said: "It's been a successful six years here, and now that we've won the second one, it's even more satisfying.
"I just hope people have enjoyed me playing here. It's what I always hope for when I step on the field."
It is believed that he could return to MLS in the future in an ownership capacity.
Coach Bruce Arena had no doubts about the fact that Beckham would continue to be successful.
"Many would think it is the last chapter, I think David thinks there is another chapter and if there is it is probably going to be another great championship," he said.
Beckham won league titles for renowned clubs like Manchester United and Real Madrid in Europe, before winning two MLS titles for Galaxy.
"Twenty years from now we are going to look at this league and still talk about David Beckham as the one who helped turn us," Arena added.
Former U.S. national team goalkeeper Kasey Keller considered Beckham as one of the most suitable players for the North American league, because he had everything that is required to play here.
"It was at a time when the league needed something to give it a big global kick-start and there wasn't a bigger global personality in the game than David Beckham," Keller said.
"It just made the league relevant, made people take notice and because of that other teams were able to step up."
Beckham's six year stay in Galaxy saw more international players coming to play in MLS.
"He has been fantastic for this league," Ireland's Robbie Keane, who plays with the Galaxy, said.
"He has put MLS on the map and made players like myself want to come over and play here because the league has grown massively. That's in a huge part down to David.
"We are certainly going to miss him but I am so happy we have sent him off with a championship."
