Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been named Athletes in Action 2014 Bart Starr Award winner as the NFL player displaying "outstanding character and leadership in the home, on the field and in the community."
According to Packers.com, Rodgers will formally be honored during the 27th annual NFL-sanctioned Super Bowl Breakfast presented by Companies with a Mission, on Friday, Jan. 31, 2014 at New York's Marriot Marquis.
The website reports Rodgers emerged from a list of finalists that included Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark and the Minnesota Vikings Jared Allen.
During his nine NFL seasons, Rodgers is almost as well known for his charitable work as he is his touchdown pases. This past fall, he partnered with Raise Hope for Congo, speaking publicly about his desire to see an end to the conflict in that country. Rodgers is also an activist for the Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer (MACC) fund, an organization working to cure childhood cancer and blood disorders.
The winner of the Bart Starr Award is voted on by NFL players and is named after Pro Football Hall of Famer and Green Bay legendary quarterback Bart Starr. Past award winners include Jason Witten, London Fletcher, Drew Brees, Kurt Warner, LaDainian Tomlinson, Reggie White and Mike Singletary.
The news, no doubt, comes as a welcome respite for Rodgers, still licking his wounds from the Packers first-round NFL playoff ouster and the backlash over recent rumors one-time roommate Kevin Lanflisi may now be insinuating their relationship was once of a romantic nature.
