Former New York Knicks star guard Stephon Marbury is being sued by Ford Motors in Superior court over nonpayment of more than $35,000 on a high-priced vehicle he once agreed to purchase.
According to TMZ, agreed to a six-year lease on a $96,000 2007 Land Rover with interest rates of a staggering 11.5 percent. Under terms of such a deal, the website reports Marbury was on the hook for $37,000 in interest payments alone.
Ford Motor Credit Co. claims Marbury, who made $88 million in NBA salary alone, stopped making payments on the vehicle in 2012. Marbury now plays for the Beijing Ducks in the Chinese Basketball League and won a title with the team in 2012.
The 36-year-old, two-time NBA All-Star was drafted No. 4 overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1996 draft.
Over the years, Marbury developed a reputation for being a willing philanthropist, donating some $9 million to charities to aid victims of such tragedies as 9/11, Hurricane Katrina and to New York City emergency responders and teachers.
Marbury also founded "Starbury" shoe line, which marketed sneakers to youths at a fraction of the cost of most apparel makers.
