Wozzilroy Breakup Rumors? Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki Announce Engagement on Twitter [VIDEO]

A relationship three years in the making is entering its next phase.

Former world's No. 1 golfer Rory McIlroy and former No. 1 world's tennis player Caroline Wozniacki announced on Twitter on New Year's Eve that they are engaged.

Wozniacki announced the engagement to her 570,000-plus followers, The Courier Mail reported. In her tweet shown on USA TODAY Sports' For the Win, she said, "Happy New Year everyone! Rory and I started 2014 with a bang! ... I said YES!!!!"

McIlroy posted his own tweet three minutes later, saying, "Happy New Year everyone! I have a feeling it's going to be a great year!! My first victory of 2014 #shesaidyes!!"

The two were engaged in Sydney, where Wozniacki is preparing for the APIA International.

Wozniacki had to deny rumors of a breakup in October. According to USA TODAY Sports, the Irish Independent reported that McIlroy had broken up with the tennis star because of an unflattering photo she took of McIlroy when he was sleeping and posted it to her Twitter account in September.

The couple, which is nicknamed, "Wozzilroy," publicly denied the breakup.

Wozniacki reportedly told the Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet (USA TODAY reported that the quote used Google Translate to put into English):

"I'm so tired of the rumors. They occur every time Rory and I are apart a few days or do not write on Twitter. There is nothing in it, and from now on I just think that I will keep my private life private. It is so annoying that the media and the so-called sources constantly spread the rumors. They write just what they want.

"[...] All is well [with the relationship], and then there's not much more to say about it. I just want to be allowed to live my life off the court without all the speculation."

McIlroy has won two major championships, the 2011 U.S. Open and the 2012 PGA Championship. Wozniacki advanced to the finals of the U.S. Open women's tennis tournament in 2009 but has not won a Grand Slam event.
