The San Francisco 49ers thrashed the Arizona Cardinals 24-3 in Monday night's one sided game.
Quarterback Alex Smith completed 18 of 19 passes for 232 yards with three TDs. The only incomplete pass was due to a drop by receiver Delanie Walker when he was wide open.
It was a fantastic night for the 49ers who completely dominated the game against Cardinals.
49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said: "Eighteen of 19, I have never seen that. How important for your quarterback to play very well? It is very important and I don't know how you play much better. It was a fantastic game by him."
Harbaugh also dismissed previous reports about Smith's lost confidence. "It's just a lot of gobble, gobble, turkey from jive turkey gobblers," he added. That paints a pretty good picture."
Darnell Dockett, the Arizona defensive tackle seemed stunned by Alex's superlative performance.
"Everyone's surprised," he admitted. "My 5-year-old son's surprised but at the end of the day it wasn't like he had to make the long perfect throws. He had some guys open and we missed some tackles and they made plays."
Meanwhile Smith, the star for the 49ers, said he was completely unaware of his impressive statistics. "(Not being aware) is a good thing," Smith said. "I don't want to think about my stats or incompletions or anything like that.
"I was kind of in a good rhythm, the whole offense was. At this point I don't care. If you ask me a few years ago, yeah maybe, but at this point I don't really care. I am concerned about winning. The guys in the locker room know what I am about and that is what really matters."
Smith, it seems, has certainly found his lost form and confidence. He had been written off many times in his career and had to face a lot of criticism at times. He said jokingly: "It was in my closet. I found it."
San Francisco built a massive 17-0 lead at halftime as Smith completed 14 of 15 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns.
The Cardinals' defense looked poor missing tackle after tackle. In fact their defense was supposed to be their strength.
Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt said: "This was a big test for us, and everyone saw how it went. It was disappointing to say the least."The home crowd booed the Cardinals, who have now lost four straight games, when they were down 17-0 at halftime. John Skelton, the Cardinals quarterback described the loss as "embarrassing" and "humiliating."
