Minnesota Timberwolves star guard Anthony Edwards' unwavering confidence in his abilities was on display at the start of Team USA's training camp in Las Vegas in preparation for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
The 6-foot-4 shooting guard has made an eye-catching statement about his role in the United States men's basketball team, comprised of NBA stars and all-time greats.
"I'm still the number one option. Y'all might look at it differently, but I don't look at it that different," the 22-year-old told journalist Ben Golliver of The Washington Post during the Team USA training camp.
This statement comes despite the national team boasting the best players of the generation with more experience, including past NBA Finals MVPs LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and Kawhi Leonard.

"I just go out there and be myself. Shoot my shots, play defense. They've got to fit in to play around me. That's how I feel," Edwards added.
Anthony Edwards was Team USA's main man last summer
Edwards' statement has merit, as he was anointed Team USA's number-one option last summer during the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Manila.
That team boasted younger, up-and-coming stars and some role players in the NBA instead of the star-studded squad this year.
However, the team only managed to finish fourth place in the tournament, losing the bronze medal game against Team Canada, led by Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
