Former Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter will be charged with a federal felony following the infamous sports betting scandal that resulted in his lifetime ban from the NBA.
Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn filed a criminal information sheet naming the 6-foot-10 big man alongside four other co-conspirators on Tuesday, July 2nd.
The exact charges and court date were not included in the document and are unknown as of now, but the four men, namely Ammar Awawdeh, Timothy McCormack, Mahmud Mollah, and Long Phi Pham, were charged with scheming to profit off information Porter gave away about deliberate plans to exit games.
Porter played in 26 games in the 2023-24 season and averaged 3.7 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game in 13.8 minutes.
Apart from sharing inside information with sports bettors, the 24-year-old was also found to be placing bets on his own games, including betting against the Raptors to lose.
Jontay Porter's lawyer reveals that player is cooperating
Porter's lawyer, Jeff Jensen, gave an update about the disgraced player last night in a statement last month.
"Jontay is a good young man with strong faith that will get him through this. He was in over his head due to a gambling addiction," he said.
Jensen also mentioned that Porter is receiving treatment for his gambling addiction and has been fully cooperating with law enforcement during their investigations.
