South Carolina Coach Dawn Staley Drops GOAT Message for Caitlin Clark After Title Win

Does Caitlin Clark need an NCAA title to be considered college basketball GOAT?

That debate will probably continue, especially now that her team, the Iowa State Hawkeyes, lost to the South Carolina Gamecocks in the finals.

She is getting her flowers anyway despite the loss, and when it comes to debate, one voice contributes to her case.

That is South Carolina coach Dawn Staley, who just called Clark this generation's GOAT.

The three-time NCAA champion coach made the statement on the podium while her team celebrated their win.

"I want to personally thank Caitlin Clark for lifting up our sport," she said.

"Hush! She carried a heavy load for our sport and it's just not going to stop on the collegiate tour but when she's the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft she's gonna lift that league up as well. So Caitlin Clark, if you're out there, you are one of the GOATS of our game and we appreciate you."

Clark will join the WNBA

Clark wraps up a college career that compares to no one.

"I'm sad we lost this game, but I'm also so proud of myself, I'm so proud of my teammates, I'm so proud of this program," Clark said after the loss.

"There's going to be tears. It is sad this is all over, and this is the last time I'm going to put on an Iowa jersey."

She is the leading scorer in the NCAA and is regarded as among the greatest in college basketball, both in men's and women's divisions.

The 22-year-old is embracing a new challenge in her career as she is set to join the 2024 WNBA draft, where she is expected to go no. 1.
