Chargers Release Mike Williams to Avoid Cap Hell, Where Will the Talented Wideout End Up?

The Los Angeles Chargers are releasing veteran receiver Mike Williams, clearing up some much needed salary cap space.

Mike Williams spent seven seasons with the Chargers, where he was the No.7 pick drafted in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Throughout his career, he proved to be a reliable receiver. Williams finished his career with the Bolts with 4,806 yards and 41 touchdowns, posting two 1,000-yard seasons.

Williams appeared in just three games last season due to a torn ACL.

Chargers Clearing up the Cap

The Chargers entered today with over $24.6 million over the cap. Cutting Williams created a $12.4 million dead cap hit.

The Los Angeles Chargers are now set to save $20 million in cap space before the new league year begins.

Defensive end Kahlil Mack has also restructured his contract, which would keep him with the Bolts.

Based on Williams' time with the Chargers, any wide receiver needy team could sign the standout receiver as he has proven that when healthy he can get downfield and be a difference-maker on any team's offense.

Here are three potential landing spots for Mike Williams.

Mike Williams to the New England Patriots

Mike Williams could possibly sign with the New England Patriots, who have had issues at the wide receiver position throughout the 2023 season.

Last season, the Patriots showed they needed a lot of help in that department, failing to have one WR record over 1,000 yards.

The Patriots may be drafting their new franchise quarterback in the 2024 draft this season and signing Mike Williams instantly will give their new QB a big-time threat.

New York Jets Still Need Another Wideout

The New York Jets desperately need another receiver to play alongside Garrett Wilson and it could possibly be Mike Williams.

Last season, Wilson was the only receiver to record over 400 receiving yards and 30 receptions for the Jets. Signing Williams would definitely give Aaron Rodgers a bit more help in the passing game.

Why Not Join the Kansas City Chiefs

Mike Williams could possibly sign with the Chargers AFC West rivals, the Kansas City Chiefs.

Despite winning two Super Bowls, the Chiefs have shown to have significant issues at wide receiver. Signing Williams and pairing him next to Rashee Rice instantly improves their wide receiver room.

With Patrick Mahomes restructuring his contract and freeing up some extra money, the franchise could look to attain another receiving threat.
