NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is perhaps the most prominent figure in the game who is not a player.

Born into a Jewish-American family, Silver's roots trace back to Rye, New York, a northern suburb of New York City in Westchester County, where he was born and raised. He completed his high school education at Rye High School in 1980.

Following graduation, Silver pursued higher education at Duke University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. From 1984 to 1985, Silver served as a legislative aide, contributing to the office of politician Les AuCoin.

Having obtained his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 1988, Silver served as an associate at Cravath, Swaine & Moore law firm. He initially aspired to follow in the footsteps of his late father, Edward Silver, by pursuing a career in law.

However, in 1992, Silver's professional trajectory shifted, and he began his tenure with the NBA. Over his initial eight years with the league, he assumed various roles, including Senior VP and COO of NBA Entertainment, Special Assistant to the Commissioner, and at one point, the NBA Chief of Staff.

Silver's remarkable contributions to the NBA's Entertainment division ultimately led to his promotion to Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer in 2006.

Silver was endorsed by his predecessor, the late David Stern, to assume the commissioner role in 2012. He officially became the league's fifth commissioner on February 1, 2014, ending Stern's 30-year tenure.
