Jason Pierre-Paul Injury Update [VIDEO]: JPP Out For Season? Doctors: 'May Not Play Again This Season'

New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul may be out for the season after doctors recommended that he shut things down for the year as he is still ailed by his shoulder injury.

According to ESPN, multiple team sources have told the Giants defensive end that they believe he should take the final three games of the season off in order to heal and prevent the risk of further damage to the injury. ESPN reports a second team source said that Pierre-Paul is "likely" to heed the doctor's advice and shut down until next year, but wouldn't go into detail on the specifics about the advice from the medical personnel.

Pierre-Paul sustained the injury on Nov. 10 against the Oakland Raiders but played in the following two games against the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys, but was on the field for less than half of the defensive plays in the loss against the Cowboys.

The Giants host the Seattle Seahawks this week before traveling to Detroit to play the Lions on Dec. 22 and then hosting the Washington Redskins to close out their season on Nov. 29.

Pierre-Paul said the shoulder was "getting better day-by-day" and rode an exercise bike on the side of the field during the team's practice on Thursday, ESPN reports.

The defensive end enjoyed a tremendous year two seasons ago, mounting 16.5 sacks to finish fourth in the league in that category. This year hasn't been as promising, as JPP had just two sacks through 11 games before the injury began to nag him.

The Giants as a whole haven't been a team that has accumulated a lot of sacks this season as the team has just 25 sacks--which is the second worst in the NFL and only two above the NFL-worst Jacksonville Jaguars (23).

JPP spent the majority of training camp recovering from offseason back surgery, but he was able to take his spot on the field in Week 1 when the Giants took on the Cowboys, though he never returned to the form that made him one of the best defensive threats on the Giants.

Pierre-Paul has been banged up a lot this season, including suffering a knee injury in Week 4 against the Kansas City Chiefs before injuring his shoulder in Week 10 against the Oakland Raiders. He was able to play through both of those ailments in the two games that followed that game against Oakland, but he missed the last two Giants games--the first two games he's missed in his four-year career.

In his four-year NFL career with the Giants, Pierre-Paul has 29.5 sacks through 59 games with two interceptions for two touchdowns and he's amounted 152 tackles.

This season, JPP had the two sacks while adding and interception, a fumble and 20 tackles, and that may be his final stat count for 2013.
