For the Denver Nuggets' sake, hopefully Brian Shaw didn't quit after a sample size of one game.
The Denver Post reported that Shaw, the Nuggets' first-year head coach, was searching for an answer for the team's slow starts.
According to the Post, Shaw has been trying to figure out why the team starts so poorly on the offensive end in games. He was going through the team's locker room before a game last week and saw the players eating pizza and nachos.
The report said Shaw surmised that the junk food could be a culprit and had all of it thrown away. Before Monday night's game against the Washington Wizards, Shaw had fresh salads with chicken breast and cold-cut sandwiches available for the players.
Denver scored 18 points in the first quarter, prompting the Post to write, "The sluggish result was the same."
"We'll keep searching and seeking until we find (it)," The Post quoted Shaw as saying after that game. "We just talk about the starters needing to start the game for us."
But a CBSSports.com report looking into nutrition in the NBA revealed the importance of diet in the case study of Houston Rockets center Dwight Howard when he was a member of the Los Angeles Lakers last season.
The report said that the Lakers hired a nutritionist to study the eating habits of the players on the team and how a better diet might benefit the team. The doctor discovered that Howard was eating the equivalent of 24 candy bars per day while with the Lakers.
He agreed to stop his sugar intake around the all-star game, and he played much better for the Lakers in the second half of the season, and the Lakers went from eight games under .500 to eight games over .500 to make the playoffs.
If Shaw wants to keep searching for ways to start faster, he would be wise to keep with the dietary change.
