More than 40,000 fans who had come to cheer their home side at the Comercia Park, were disappointed when they saw the grounds crew members cover the field during a rain delay at Game 4 of the American League Championship.
The rain gods saved the Yankees some time, giving them just one more day to get themselves out of a 0-3 hole against the Detroit Tigers.
Brian Cashman, the Yankees general manager said: "The weather report was fairly obvious. Turned out to be an unfortunate situation where there was no rain for this period of time, but the rain was going to hit regardless and make it an unplayable circumstance.
"I think it was an obvious decision based on what the radar was."
The game has now been rescheduled for Thursday at 4 pm. The pitching matchup will remain the same. Tiger's Max Scherzer will pitch against the Yankees' ace CC Sabathia.
Russell Martin, catcher for the Yankees said: "You don't want your top guys throwing like two or three innings. You want your ace to be able to throw his game and not have it dependent on the weather."
The Yankees, who certainly didn't mind the delay, would be looking to learn from their previous mistakes and come afresh on Thursday.
Cashman said about the rescheduling: "We were ready to go, so I wouldn't say it was a benefit. We were ready to go but it doesn't matter. We'll be ready to go again tomorrow. But I'm not thinking that far ahead. If we take care of business tomorrow, we can worry about the next day. I want to be in position to do that."
The slumping Alex Rodriguez who had been benched yet again was seemingly disappointed. He's had an ordinary season with just 3 for 23 this postseason. Cashman said that his benching was "purely baseball-related."
Rodriguez said: "I'm obviously not doing somersaults, I'm not happy about it. You come to the ballpark feeling like you can help the team win.
"And when you see your name is not in the lineup, you're obviously disappointed. You've just got to shift to being a cheerleader and also make sure you're ready when your number's called."
Even Granderson was benched for game 4. He was replaced by Brett Gardner.
When asked if he was disappointed about not being selected, Granderson said: "Not at all, I understand it, we've got to make changes and adjustments. I'll be ready to help in any form or fashion.
"You want to go out and do a lot more to help the team, but unfortunately I haven't been able to do that. Maybe the change of . . . not being in there will help that out."
