The Los Angeles Lakers are one of the most historically successful franchises in NBA history, being tied with their eternal rivals, Boston Celtics, for most championships in league history with 17.
Nevertheless, the team adorned in purple and gold has encountered its fair share of challenges, notably during the 2010s, a period marked by the declining phase of Lakers icon Kobe Bryant's illustrious career and the subsequent rebuilding years following his retirement.
During this period, the franchise experienced some of the most lopsided losses.
Let's look at some of the worst losses in the history of the Los Angeles Lakers.
The worst losses in Los Angeles Lakers history:
4. Los Angeles Lakers vs. Philadelphia 76ers - November 27, 2023 (138-94, 44 points)
The Lakers recently suffered their fourth-worst loss in team history on Monday, November 27, against the Philadelphia 76ers at the Wells Fargo Center.
Reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid torched the Lakeshow with a triple-double with 30 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists to improve to 12-5 for the 2023-24 season.
This is also the worst-ever loss for LeBron James in his 21 seasons in the league.
3. Los Angeles Lakers vs. Portland Trail Blazers - January 9, 1995 (129-83, 46 points)
This defeat occurred in a bleak period during the mid-1990s, following Magic Johnson's retirement and preceding the team's return to contention with the acquisitions of Shaquille O'Neal through free agency and the drafting of Kobe Bryant in 1996.
The game took place at the Blazers' Memorial Coliseum, marking the team's final season in that arena before relocating to their current home, the Moda Center, in the following season.
2 (tied). Los Angeles Lakers vs. Los Angeles Clippers - March 6, 2014 (142-94, 48 points)
The Lakers endured a humiliating defeat, losing by an overwhelming 48-point margin to their cross-town rivals, the Los Angeles Clippers, at the Staples Center - the shared home arena for both teams.
This occurred during the peak of the Clippers' Lob City era, featuring notable players such as Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, and DeAndre Jordan.
Notably, this game has the widest victory margin in the Clippers history. This is also the biggest home loss of the Lakeshow.
2 (tied). Los Angeles Lakers vs. Utah Jazz - March 28, 2016 (123-75, 48 points)
Taking place amidst the Lakers' worst-ever season in 2015-16, where they posted a 17-65 record, this 48-point loss also marked the most lopsided defeat in Kobe Bryant's storied career.
The Black Mamba had a disappointing performance in the match, managing only a 1-of-11 shooting record from the field and scoring a mere five points. This subpar showing occurred in one of the games within the final few weeks of his illustrious career.
1. Los Angeles Lakers vs. Dallas Mavericks - January 22, 2017 (122-73, 49 points)
Now in full rebuild mode, the Lakers encountered setbacks, notably marked by another franchise-worst performance against the Mavericks in 2017.
The 49-point defeat occurred on the 11th anniversary of Kobe Bryant's 81-point performance against the Raptors, which remains the second-highest point total scored by a single player in a game in NBA history.
The whole Lakers team only scored 73 points during the loss against Dallas.
