In the last three seasons, Formula 1 has witnessed the dominance of Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Following a close and historic battle with Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton in the 2021 season, the 26-year-old secured his maiden World Championship with a dramatic overtake in the final lap of the year's final race at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Since then, Verstappen began to wipe out the competition by clinching the titles in both the 2022 and 2023 seasons with several races to spare. Most of his victories came with a considerable margin, establishing a significant gap between him and the rest of the grid.

The significant regulations overhaul leading up to the 2022 season played a crucial role in Verstappen's success. Red Bull successfully mastered the adjustments needed to create the most effective car under the new rules, which are expected to remain in effect until 2025.

Looking ahead, Formula 1 is set to introduce a new generation of engines and rule changes in 2026, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape.

The question arises: who is poised to challenge and potentially take away the Dutchman's mantle?

Oscar Piastri (McLaren)

The Australian-born driver is undeniably the standout rookie among this year's newcomers and is recognized as one of the most promising young talents on the grid.

At just 22 years old, Piastri has impressively reached the podium twice within the first 20 races of his career. This achievement is particularly outstanding considering McLaren initially had one of the worst cars on the grid at the start of the season, marking a remarkable turnaround in performance midway through the year.

Should Piastri maintain his upward trajectory, there's no doubt that he has the potential to contend for championships in the future.

Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)

For Ferrari, the combination of talent and resources has consistently been present. Many of their challenges in recent years have originated from internal issues, including problems with pit stops, strategies, bureaucratic hurdles, and unfortunate engine failures.

Leclerc, widely recognized as one of the most talented drivers in Formula 1, showcased his skills by going head-to-head with Verstappen in 2022 when Ferrari had a competitive car at the beginning of the year.

As long as Leclerc remains with the Prancing Horse and the team produces a competitive car, they stand a chance of contending for championships. The key lies in addressing internal challenges and maintaining a competitive edge in car development.

Lando Norris (McLaren)

If McLaren manages to produce a competitive car, it could pose a challenge for Verstappen, especially that he considers Norris as his best friend on the grid.

The dynamics could become complex, as history has shown with the Lewis Hamilton-Nico Rosberg rivalry, where inseparable friends from their karting days became intense competitors as teammates with Mercedes, leading to a strained friendship.

Norris, being one of the most talented drivers in Formula 1, would undoubtedly be a strong contender if McLaren delivers a competitive car. However, he also faces stiff competition from his own highly talented teammate, Oscar Piastri.

George Russell (Mercedes)

If Mercedes regains competitive form in the future, Russell could be at the forefront of Toto Wolff's racing outfit.

The team's wealth of championship experience could prove invaluable as they work towards re-establishing competitiveness. Russell, driven by a strong desire to ascend to the top tier of F1 drivers, possesses the talent necessary to achieve that goal.

The Brit is not afraid to race hard and go elbow-to-elbow on the track, and he will certainly be a contender once he gets a good car.
