Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes fulfills several roles for the team - starting quarterback, leader, face of the franchise, and many more.

Another one has been added to that list.

Chiefs special teams coordinator David Toub revealed that the two-time Super Bowl MVP is also the team's backup punter.

"The backup punter? Yeah, we had a plan. We had a plan, and believe it or not, [Patrick Mahomes] is our backup punter," the Chiefs assistant coach bared.

Toub proceeded to share that Mahomes could do the job, as the 28-year-old regularly shows up to the task.

"[Mahomes] can do it. He shows me all the time. He's out there going on Saturday hitting punts. He can do it all that guy," Toub added.

Mahomes nearly punted the ball for the Chiefs

After Chiefs regular punter Tommy Townsend sustained a left knee injury during team practice before their Thursday Night Football game against the Denver Broncos on October 12, Mahomes nearly did the job for the team.

Fortunately, Townsend managed to see action through the injury, punting three times and averaging 48 yards per punt.

Given his full participation in Wednesday's practice last October 18, Townsend appears to be in good shape for Week 7 against the Los Angeles Chargers, barring any unforeseen setbacks.

Mahomes' most recent punting experience in a game dates back to high school. During his tenure at Whitehouse High in Texas, he punted 29 times, averaging 37.8 yards per punt.
