The National Football League (NFL) has announced that Mexico will not host a game in 2024, despite Estadio Azteca hosting games in 2005, 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2022 as part of the league's International Series.

NFL Executive Vice President Peter O'Reilly confirmed that the league has decided against hosting a game in Mexico next season due to the ongoing modernization and renovations at Estadio Azteca, which are part of the country's preparations for hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

These renovations will not be completed in time for the NFL's International Series next year.

However, there's a possibility that the NFL could make a comeback to Mexico City in 2025 once the stadium is expected to be fully prepared.

O'Reilly added that the league is already gearing up to hold future international games in Spain and Brazil.

The NFL has dispatched officials to explore the potential for organizing regular season games in Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, and Sao Paulo.

"That's the diligence that we do constantly. What is the stadium like here? Could we play a game here? What does the support look like?," the NFL executive told league insider Adam Schefter of ESPN.

None of these cities have previously hosted an NFL game, with the possibility of this happening as soon as next season.

London and Germany, hosting five games this season, will continue to stage NFL International Series games in the 2024 season.
