The New York Jets could use a veteran quarterback to fill the void left by an injured Aaron Rodgers, and several names have cropped up. One almost forgotten name is that of Cam Newton.

The 2015 NFL Most Valuable Player has not seen action since the 2021 NFL season. After going through injuries, Newton has struggled to recapture his old form when he was still with the Carolina Panthers from 2011 to 2019.

Regardless, this does not appear to be alarming for the 34-year-old player who also had a chance to rejuvenate his career with the New England Patriots in 2020. Despite the abundance of free agent play-callers, Newton will not sign on the dotted line of any low-ball offers.

“Those days are over with. I’d be wasting my time,” Newton said when he appeared on the “RG3 and The Ones” podcast with another former NFL player, Robert Griffin III.

Further, Newton said that he is in shape and could play NFL ball right now if a team gives him a chance, the New York Post reported.

“Because I will tell you if you don’t think I could be on a roster right now I could. But it’s bigger than that to me. Am I in shape right now? Hell yeah,” he added.

Jets keeping faith in Zach Wilson

Given his performances in the last couple of seasons, the Jets are unlikely to shell out a huge offer to sign Newton.

Zach Wilson will have to continue stepping up for Rodgers, showing glimpses of that in their loss to the Chiefs last weekend, 23-20.

The Jets will face the Denver Broncos in Week 5 on Sunday, October 8. The Broncos are 2.5-point favorites to prevail over the Jets per CBS Sports.
